Cardon. This relative of the Saguaro is the primary large cactus on the islands in the Gulf of California.

Dead Cardon. The ribs provide the strength of the main stems.

The stems and even fairly thick branches of this bush were green; the bush did not need leaves to perform photosynthesis.

The Coyote Melon has a huge bulb at the base of its stem.
