Bui Tin (1927-2018), a PAVN colonel and military journalist, was for years a member of the editorial board of the PAVN newspaper Quan doi nhan dan, but defected to the West in 1990.

Wilfred Burchett: Books written by Vietnamese Communists are often pretty hard for Americans to read. One of the best ways to get around this difficulty is to read the books by the Australian writer Wilfred Burchett. He travelled widely in the Communist-ruled sections of Vietnam during the war, he wrote well, and for a Communist propagandist he was unusually honest. His relevant books include:

Cao Van Luong, Nguyen Van Nhat, and Vo Kim Cuong, Lich su khang chien chong thuc dan Phap cua quan va dan khu Tay Bac, 1945-1954. Hanoi: NXB Khoa hoc xa hoi, 2003. 528 pp.

Dang Thuy Tram, Last Night I Dreamed of Peace: The Diary of Dang Thuy Tram. New York: Harmony Books, 2007. xxiii, 225 pp. Translated by Andrew X. Pham; Introduction by Frances Fitzgerald. Tram, a doctor sent south from Hanoi to work in a hospital in Quang Ngai, was killed by US troops 6/22/70. Her diary, captured by the US troops, covering 1968-70, ended up in the Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech University. A copy was eventually sent to Hanoi, where it was published as Nhat ky Dang Thuy Tram (Hanoi: Nha Xuat Ban Hoi Nha Van, 2005) and attracted a lot of attention. There was a forum on this book in the Journal of Vietnamese Studies, vol. 3 no. 2 (Summer 2008), pp. 172-221. The essay I found most interesting was Vuong Tri Nhan, "The Diary of Dang Thuy Tram and the Postwar Vietnamese Mentality" (pp. 180-195).

Declaration of the First Congress of the South Viet Nam National Front for Liberation. Hanoi: Foreign Languages Publishing House, June 1962. 36 pp. Declaration dated March 3, 1962. The text has been placed on-line in the Virtual Vietnam Archive of the Vietnam Project, at Texas Tech University.

Colonel Dinh Thi Van, I Engaged in Intelligence Work. Hanoi: The Gioi Publishers, 2006. 252 pp. Vietnamese original Toi di lam tinh bao: hoi ky. Hanoi: NXB Quan Doi Nhan Dan, 1988. 253 pp. Dinh Thi Van was trained as an intelligence agent and sent south probably in the mid 1950s. She was arrested once by RVN authorities, but managed to talk her way out. The main focus of the book is on the period up to 1968, although I believe she continued working as an agent until 1975. Nguyen Van Hieu, "Special War"--An Outgrowth of Neo-Colonialism. Nu anh hung luc luong vu trang nhan dan (Female heroes of the people's armed forces). Hanoi: Nha Xuat Ban Quan Doi Nhan Dan, 1994. 228 pp.

On the Problem of War and Peace. Hanoi: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1964. A collection of four long articles published in major Hanoi journals in late 1963 and early 1964. No authors are given in this collection, even for articles that had been signed in the original publications. Thus no author is given here for "Some Viewpoints on War and Peace" (pp. 61-93). When this had been published in Hoc Tap, 1964, no. 1, pp. 28-40, the author had been listed as Hong Chuong (probably a pseudonym for some senior leader). "Man and Weapons" (pp. 95-118), originally published in Hoc Tap, 1963, no. 9, is interesting; it argues that the human factor is more important than weapons in warfare, and that the proletarian army of the DRV will inevitably defeat reactionary armies. The text has been placed on-line in the Virtual Vietnam Archive of the Vietnam Project, at Texas Tech University, in two parts: pp. 1-77,   pp. 78-135.

The text has been placed on-line in the Virtual Vietnam Archive of the Vietnam Project at Texas Tech University.

They Work and Fight. Hanoi: Viet Nam Federation of Trade Unions, 1972. 66 pp. Presumably a bit fictionalized. The first of the six chapters is about the personnel struggling to keep the Thanh Hoa Bridge ("May 19 Bridge") functioning in the face of American air attacks. The last is the story of Tran Van Thai, a worker on a state farm in the highlands. On September 20, 1965, he helped to shoot down an American helicopter and capture three of its personnel. From the date, it can be determined that this was an HH-43B Huskie rescue helicopter piloted by USAF Capt. Thomas J. Curtis, who was indeed captured along with two of his crewmen. The location was near the Laotian border, southwest of Ha Tinh. The text has been placed on-line in the Virtual Vietnam Archive of the Vietnam Project, at Texas Tech University, in two parts: pp. 1-46 and pp. 47-66.

The Thieu Regime Put to the Test: 1973-1975. Hanoi: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1975. 120 pp. The text has been placed on-line in the Virtual Vietnam Archive of the Vietnam Project, at Texas Tech University, in four parts: pp. 1-32; pp. 33-63; pp. 64-93; pp. 94-120.

After the end of the war he defected to the West.

Tu dien bach khoa quan su Viet nam (Military encyclopedia of Vietnam). Hanoi: Nha xuat ban Quan doi nhan dan Viet nam, 1996. 1007 pp.   Rev. ed. Hanoi: NXB Quan Doi Nhan Dan, 2004. 1295 pp. An extremely valuable reference work.

Van Phan, Doan mat vu cua Ngo Dinh Can: sach tham khao cua luc luong CAND. 2d ed. Hanoi: Cong An Nhan Dan, 1996. 206 pp.

Viet Nam Destruction: War Damage. Hanoi: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1977. 66 pp. The text has been placed on-line in the Virtual Vietnam Archive of the Vietnam Project, at Texas Tech University.

Vietnam Courier/Le courrier du Vietnam was a magazine published in English and French, in Hanoi. Many individual articles have been placed online in the Virtual Vietnam Archive of the Vietnam Project, at Texas Tech University, but not so many whole issues. A new series began (issue numbers started over at no. 1) in 1972.

Vietnamese Studies/Etudes vietnamiennes. A series of short paperback books, typically containing five to ten articles, published in Hanoi by Foreign Languages Press/Editions en Langues Etrangeres in both English and French, on the war and a variety of other topics. If Nguyen Khac Vien was not the editor of the series from its beginning, he soon became the editor. Portions of several of these volumes have been placed on-line in the Virtual Vietnam Archive of the Vietnam Project, at Texas Tech University; see links below.

Vietnam: The Anti-U.S. Resistance War for National Salvation, 1954-1975: Military Events. The original was published by the People's Army Publishing House, Hanoi, 1980. The English translation by JPRS and/or FBIS was published in June 1982; it is available from the National Technical Information Service as JPRS 80968. 183 pp. This is, in effect, a PAVN official history of the war. While significantly biased, it is far more candid than Hanoi publications during the war; fairly detailed discussion of the infiltration of men and equipment from north to south during the war was especially striking at the time this was first published. The main problem is the lack of serious analysis, and the episodic nature of the narrative. The text has been placed on-line in the Virtual Vietnam Archive of the Vietnam Project, at Texas Tech University, in four parts: pp. 1-48, pp. 49-98, pp. 99-148,

The Assault Youth

The "Assault Youth" (thanh nien xung phong) were a category of Communist personnel working in the transportation system in North Vietnam, in South Vietnam, and along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Many of them (70% or more in some units) were female. They have been largely ignored in the literature of the Vietnam War, but François Guillemot has written about them.
