The Lijiang Valley is a mostly pretty flat valley, running north and south, with mostly moderate mountains to either side. The airport is south of the city. The road south to the airport crosses some low hills at one point; I am not sure whether this is because there are two flat plains separated by hills, or whether there is a single flat plain but the road-builders chose not to keep the road entirely in it. The land along the road looked productive. A guide told us this valley used to be an opium producing area.

Quite a few of the fields had plastic sheeting covering the soil, with holes for individual plants to grow
through. This was done even with corn, which surprised me.
Peasants were harvesting a grain crop that I think was wheat. I believe the grain crops
in this area are wheat, buckwheat, barley, and rice.
