Pagoda in Xi'an

The Big Goose Pagoda or Big Wild Goose Pagoda was only a short walk from the Xian Garden Hotel, where we stayed in Xi'an. I did not go inside the pagoda, but I noticed that somebody had done a really nice job of repainting the woodwork on the gateway, above the entrance. This contrasted with my memory of the shockingly crude paint job that had been done on similar woodwork in sections of the Imperial Palace in Beijing when they were being restored (my guess would be about twenty years ago, though I don't actually know the date).

In the square in front of this pagoda was a statue of a Buddhist monk and scholar, Xuanzang (600-664), who had made a very arduous journey to India to bring back Buddhist sutras, setting out in 629 and returning in 645. I was told the statue had been set up about a decade ago.
