Dolphins

Photos Taken July 4, 2005

While cruising in the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez), we encountered a huge group of long-beaked common dolphins, probably five hundred or more. They were engaged in a group hunt, going after some school of fish that must have been swimming fairly deep. (If the fish had been close to the surface, there would also have been a large gathering of birds going after them.)

When racing at high speed to catch up with and surround the school of fish, the dophins had to jump high and often to breathe.

As we were departing the area, two fishing boats were approaching. I suspect they were following the dolphins, and were planning to go after the school of fish that the dolphins had located.
